I am just entering my 50th year on this planet, and am certainly old enough to know better… I have a very understanding wife, Susanne, and two wonderful children.

I was born in Torquay, Devon but immigrated to Yorkshire, home of the White Rose, and my adopted home, 26 years ago. Team sports have been a major factor throughout my life, and I have been lucky enough to have represented my country in more than one discipline.

In 2012, and aged 42, I ran the marathon des sables, my first long distance endurance race and surprised myself with a “top 100 runners” finish. That race lit the flame for further challenges and endurance events ever since.

I have never rowed, until now. This will be without doubt the biggest physical and mental challenge I have attempted.

Macmillan Cancer Support have been hugely supportive to me and my family over the years, and it therefore feels right to raise money to support this very worthy cause.

I will be covering the cost of the boat, equipment and race fees myself, as I want 100% of the money raised to go to Macmillan.
